Luke 1:39-45 & 46-55

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23 , 2012
Today we hear from the prophet Mary who sings the hymn that sees the world as it ought to be. Although we usually prefer the Latinate name Magnificat for this song, we might as well name it Revolution. It is at once the most radical and most hopeful statement of Emmanuel, God-in-Action.

Mary sings about God overthrowing what we expect as the normal way of things. And, despite our fear of loss and scarcity and messiness it really is the Good News.

Mary begins the revolution of God on Earth when she says to the angel, “Let it be.” She brings to the revolution the gifts that we can all bring in this season of radical birth: her attention, her dedication, her love.

The way the world should be is coming. And it is coming by God’s power, right now.

God of Power and Change, make us strong to stand with Mary, your waiting servant. May her song be ours. Let it be. Amen.
