Register for Blandy Lectures

Blandy Lecturer
The Rt. Rev. C. Andrew "Andy" Doyle

Bishop of the Diocese of Texas

Bishop Doyle will be concluding the fourth month of his episcopacy in the Diocese of Texas when he presents the Blandy Lectures. The second youngest member of the House of Bishops, he held town hall meetings in 14 churches (2 conducted in Spanish) in the geographically largest diocese in the Episcopal Church this spring and early summer. The purpose of the meetings was to go directly to diocesan parishioners and ask what their mission priorities are.

A gifted and experienced teacher and preacher, Bishop Doyle has a particular interest in reaching younger generations in order to partner with older and experienced church members to share wisdom across generations, invigorating growth and membership. He has training and expertise in mediation as well as multicultural ministry and served the diocese as canon to the ordinary and priest in two parishes before he was elected bishop coadjutor in May 2008.

The August 2009 issue of Texas Monthly magazine featured an interview with him. Read it at texasmonthly.com.

About the Lectures

We are aware that as Dan Kimball reflects in his book They Like Jesus But Not The Church, "The problem isn't that they stumble over the cross.  The problem is that they stumble on the attitudes of some Christians and on the Christian Subculture that we have put in their way before they can even get to the cross." (233)

You are a missionary and you realize just how questionable the whole system maybe to others.  Yet you believe in Christianity.  You believe that Christianity has something to say to the world, and that your church, The Episcopal Church in particular, can make the world a better place.  You believe your Church could take an active role in Jesus Christ's salvation of the world.  So, what will you do?

We might start at the beginning.  Look to the past for stories which teach us about our future.  We might look at the present stories of transformation.  We might even reclaim our voice.  We might take our belief that the Episcopal Church's particular Christian tradition is of value and act upon that value for the transformation of the world.  We might be successful.

Recent conversations and books have been about listening and engaging in a conversation of "generous orthodoxy," "off road disciplines," and the "renewing of our heart."

I believe we are gaining an understanding of the language needed to engage emerging generations but we don't yet have the tools for practical application of this knowledge.  I'll take this opportunity to share stories from both our ancient and postmodern context, seeking to rediscover the art of discipleship and mission.
