Upcoming Lectures at Southwest
Seminary of the Southwest has invited an Episcopal bishop, a Wesley Studies professor from Perkins School of Theology and a Chicago Divinity School theologian to lecture on its campus during the 2009-10 academic year.
"Our upcoming lecture series enhances Southwest's tradition of bringing outstanding speakers to campus ranging from Brian McLaren and Amy-Jill Levine to Phyllis Tickle and Samuel Wells in recent years. These lectures continue to inform and enrich our community," said the Very Rev. Douglas Travis, seminary dean and president.
The Rt. Rev. Andy Doyle, bishop of the Diocese of Texas and second youngest member of the House of Bishops, will present the Blandy Lectures September 22-23. Bishop Doyle will explore how Christianity has something to say to the world and how the Episcopal Church can make the world a better place during his two lectures. Details
The Claude Payne Lecture in Mission and Leadership on February 11, 2010, will be given by Dr. William Abraham, professor of Wesley studies at Perkins in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Kathryn Tanner, professor of theology at Chicago Divinity School, will be the Harvey Lecturer on March 22. Details of their lectures will be posted on the Seminary of the Southwest website later this year.
All three lectures are open to the public without charge. Each will take place in the seminary's Knapp Auditorium.
Two of the three lectures honor former seminary deans. The late Very Rev. Gray Blandy was the first dean of Southwest from 1951 to 1967. The Harvey Lectures honor his successor - the late Very Rev. Hudnall Harvey, dean of Southwest from 1968 to his death in 1972. Seminary trustees launched the Payne Lectureship in honor of the Rt. Rev. Claude Payne, former bishop of the Diocese of Texas and seminary board chair, who retired in 2003.
