“Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey…”

In a few weeks the story of a ride on a donkey will be told with the arrival of the Christ child.  This ride on a donkey from the Gospel of Matthew isn’t about the birth.  This ride takes Jesus Christ into the City of Jerusalem for the last time, closer to his death.

Jesus sends his disciples to get the donkey, not a horse.  His ride on the donkey is a gesture of peace.  It is peace that he offers to the people of Jerusalem.   The peace of God that passes understanding comes to them and they do not know him.  In Advent we wait, we make ready and we hope to know this peace.

Gracious Lord, may your peace be known to the world, now and forever.  Amen
