Isaiah 48:17-19, Matthew 11:16-19

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 14 , 2012

Has the human condition actually evolved that much since the writing of these passages in Isaiah and Matthew? Is our society not extremely childish and immature? Do we not still worship false idols at an alarming and rapidly accelerating rate? Have we heeded the eternal call to pay more attention to God? Advent, like Lent, is a call to return to our original nature, to come home, to become fully human by paying attention to the Divine. The holidays are always a test for the Pharisee within. Will I give my power away to popular representations of Christmas and forget the Christ within? This is the time to demonstrate that true human evolution is possible through intimacy with God, and not material and intellectual prowess.

Abba, please give us the strength to pay attention to you and dedicate this Advent season to the victory of consciously chosen love in each of our lives and on our planet over the lie that we are separate and uselessly acting out of fear. Amen.
