Greg Garrett publishes Faithful Citizenship

Dr. Greg Garrett, professor of English at Baylor University and writer in residence at Seminary of the Southwesthas just published his latest book, Faithful Citizenship (Patheos Press, 2012). He explained, “This is a book for everyone who, like me, is tired of partisan bickering and who wonders what it would look and feel like in this election year to make personal and public decisions based on the spiritual values of love and compassion rather than our secular American values of acquisition, power, and security.”

Dr. Garrett wrote Faithful Citizenship in response to what he perceived as the growing polarization in American culture. For the past year and a half, Dr. Garrett has been exploring the relationship between religion and politics in a weekly column for the popular online religion magazine Patheos; for the past two summers, he has been doing research on theology and politics as residential scholar at Gladstone’s Library in Wales, one of the world’s great centers for that study. Faithful Citizenship is being published on the Kindle and Nook e-book platforms, and is the first full-length e-book published by Patheos Press. “The fact that it’s being published as an e-book has made it possible for me to be incredibly current. Although the book was released in early April, I was able to cite sources and mention events from February 28 of this year.  A print book—even one rushed into print—would still be months behind the times.”

Dr. Garrett is the author of The Other Jesus, chosen by The Christian Century as an essential book on 21st Century Christianity, One Fine Potion: The Literary Magic of Harry Potter, chosen by the Association of Theological Booksellers as a Best Theological Book, and many other works on religion, politics, and culture. In addition to his writing for Patheos, he has written for The Huffington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Washington Post, Christianity Today, Relevant, and Reform (UK). Dr. Garrett is a lay preacher based at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Austin Texas, and speaks, teaches, and preaches across the United States and overseas.
